What is Visceral Manipulation?

Visceral Manipulation therapy is a gentle hands-on approach that helps your body restore motion to areas of pain and compensation. It targets your body’s own healing abilities instead of forcing changes that could cause your body more irritation. As these restrictions begin to improve, areas of your body begin to relax, and health begins to return to your tissues. Truly effective treatment requires an approach that integrates all the tissues of the body, and approaches the body as a “whole organism” because of its many interconnected systems. Visceral Manipulation is at the cutting edge of a manual, whole body approach to healing.
Visceral Manipulation is a type of manual therapy based on the work of Jean Pierre Barral, DO, an osteopath and physical therapist in France. Through research and clinical study, he has developed a method of addressing adhesions and lack of motion inside the body that create pain, symptoms and disease.
The term “disease” shows us that when the body is not healthy there is “dis-ease” or lack of freedom for the body and it’s tissues to move and function in harmony. Manual therapy to help change these areas of tension have been part of health care for thousands of years. Dr. Barral has brought an exceptional anatomical knowledge together with extensive clinical experience to develop a better and more precise form of manual therapy now called “Visceral Manipulation”. Complex motions such as playing sports down to the simple motions of breathing requires the internal part of your body to move freely without damaging structures or limiting the essential life sustaining functions such as blood flow.
As tensions increase in number or over a period of time, your body becomes less able to remain healthy without increased effort or restriction to motion, diminishing your health prematurely. Think about how pain causes you to move a body part less. These changes are all too familiar to most of us, in ourselves or friends and family members. With time, such symptoms / pain begin to further manifest or intensify if not addressed.
Visceral Manipulation will help address the root cause of your pain. For example, if you suffer from back pain, Visceral Manipulation therapy will allow your nervous system to stop telling your muscles to tighten and protect the spine, which will in turn allow your trunk to move more easily — which will then help your digestion and ease of breathing. With improved breathing and blood flow throughout your body, a better level of health overall with less effort and discomfort can be achieved.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This essential “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate.
Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.)
The use of Myofascial Release allows us to look at each patient as a unique individual. Our one-on-one therapy sessions are hands-on treatments during which our therapists use a multitude of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy. We promote independence through education in proper body mechanics and movement, self treatment instruction, enhancement of strength, improved flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.
Hands-On Treatment
Each Myofascial Release Treatment session is performed directly on skin without oils, creams or machinery. This enables the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia.
